Natural resource classroom activities
Specific activities for grades K-6. Special activities or projects for Middle and High School Select grade below for list of programs. At the Elementary level - specific dates are set aside for schools. Programs will be booked on those dates. Other dates can be scheduled as time permits with part time outreach coordinator. The topics covered will be on: þ recycling þ reuse þ reducing waste þ soil þ water þ natural resources Please e-mail Jessie if you have any questions. Field days can also be specifically designed by grade level or for the entire school. Teacher Workshops Teacher workshops can be provided to groups of 12 or more on: Outdoor Classroom Utilization – Environmental Education areas Do you have an outdoor classroom that is not being used to its potential? Work with Jessie on curriculum design and designing events to utilize your site. Outdoor Classroom Development – Environmental Education areas If you have some space at your school that you would like to work with a team of students, parents and staff or community members – Susan will facilitate this group in the design and implementation of your site. Project WILD (needs 6 hours can be divided into 2 - 3 hour sessions) This preK-12 interdisciplinary supplemental wildlife education program is the most widely used environmental ed. program. It teaches basic wildlife ecology an management concepts so students can make informed decisions concerning wildlife and take constructive actions to benefit wildlife, people and the environment. (Correlated to Indiana State Science Standards) Project Learning Tree (needs 6 hours can be divided into 2 - 3 hour sessions) Project Learning Tree is an award-winning internationally recognized environmental education program that provides ready-made lessons and activities for educators. PLT can integrate easily into an existing curriculum and can be used to supplement all subject areas. PLT uses the forest as a "window to the world," helping young people gain an awareness and knowledge of the world around them and their place within it. Students develop skills in creative problem solving, critical thinking, and evaluation and research while having fun. (Correlated to Indiana State Science Standards) Project WET (needs 6 hours can be divided into 2 -3 hour sessions)
Facilitate and promote awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship of
water resources through the development and dissemination of classroom ready
teaching aids. (Correlated to Indiana State Science Standards)
Shelby County has many outdoor classrooms scattered throughout the county. They are a wonderful addition to schools, parks and other public areas. We can assist you in the development of a site or utilization of a current site. Please call our office if you are interested in hosting workshops for staff to develop or utilize your area. We can also assist with site design.
